Also, the issue with retep/bacchus/WilliamLP all being so close wouldn't be quite so bad if they had all settles in place. Instead, both Bacchus and William LP moved closer to retep's starting spot before settling, and retep moved inland so that he had much less guaranteed land than those 2 did.
True it wouldn't make more of a difference than room for 1 more city on each front or so, but with this map type/size it is significant.

If everyone is supposed to be close, why there are 19 tiles between Serdoa and Plako? Or, I guess, there could be somebody between them.

I never said I would or tried to make each player be a similar difference between each other. My main focus was to make sure everyone had a workable position and make sure one player didn't win the game with their start. Some players are closer, some are farther. Some players have really nice land, some have land more barren. Some have lots of islands accessible, some don't as much.

Realistically? I think Inca and Carthage actually ought to settle towards Retep and force him to do something about it, especially as Inca just popped Archery. Reteps options I can't really comment on because I have spoiler knowledge of resources, other than to say he has to find somewhere to expand to and his second city placement is going to be critical, but he has perfect starting techs in Hunting and Mining, so BW>Archery unless he had copper would be surprisingly good, especially if he built a settler at size 2.
Commodore is right in that his land looks really poor, but worst case scenario chopping a monument for that gold/irrigated corn city should bootstrap him to AH if he lacks copper, and he hasn't even uncovered his coast or his eastern lands that he would contest against the Vikings.
scooter et al actually look to have decent land, but if the discover Commodore it's going to be a bitch...really, they want to get a settler and archer out, and go cram it on the hill tile 6S8W of their capital and they basically just beat Nakor and Jester straight up so long as they hold that city.
Lewgers start is just stupidly good, to the extent that they can actually expand, rush azza with 100 hammers worth of units, fail spectacularly and still not fall behind most players. I don't think it actually matters what they do, but I worked out some MM for that start that gave them a settler, size 4, 2 workers and 2 warriors by T34. Without optimization. Realistically could get a hell of a lot more than that.
azza and Jesterfool, doesn't really matter what I say, they are going to make 1 stupid mistake due to inexperience, stupidity or arrogance, pick 2.
