[SPOILERS] scooter's thread: how to finish second

That and we would have given up both the rice & sheep to get the fish

Yeah sorry to disappoint here, I was pretty much tuned out by this point. Even my little attack on Ruff that netted me 2 cities (well, 1.5, hah) was really sloppy and not very well-done. I may have a few more pictures sitting around that I just never named + uploaded though, so I'll take a look.

This is way leading and should not have been asked. Posts like this are why some people never post exact wonder ETAs.
I think this is unfair, and I'm pretty sure I wasn't reading other threads at that point(?).
Regardless, I definitely had no knowledge of what was happening in game then, and IIRC the response was that it had already been built. (Edit: no it wasn't)
Still I don't see if, on hearing someone is researching a wonder pre-req tech one asks wether there are plans to build that wonder is spoilery at all. If you talk about heading up to democracy next so you can get your cottages grown (for example) what is wrong with asking if you have any plans for SoL?

Noble was pretty sure Scooter was going to build Colossus ahead of us in the game, too. So, I'm not sure what I mean with that

I'm pretty sure my response was "I'm bulbing Astro early, no way I'm building Colossus" lol

Pretty obvious that his lurker knowledge influenced your decision making alright

Just a response to the theory at work here. I agree with the growing consensus that the Colossus can become a trap, but I think that it is a mental trap only. Even with a relatively early Astro, it'd be really interesting to do a hammer:gold analysis. I'd imagine that on a water map like this with a reasonable sized empire, it wouldn't take many turns to make colossus a pretty good investment since it's a relatively cheap wonder. Disclaimer, I haven't done the math so this is just guestimating.

Say in a more vague manner. You could ask whether the player has any plans to build any wonders, for example. Not to mention that you didn't ask whether scooter had any plans to build the wonder, you asked whether he would be getting the tech soon enough to build the wonder. That implies that you think he should be building the wonder should he get the tech soon enough.

I think it's hard to say what the implication of a statement like Q's was. I read it as a question as to whether Scooter plans to get MC quick enough to have a shot at it simply because delaying the tech means a lower chance of getting the wonder in general (which I think is a fine question in a vacuum), not as a implication that if he doesn't do it fast he's in trouble because someone else is building it already or has plans to (which is not a fine question).

Essentially, we'll all disagree on some on the fine nuances of what questions imply what meanings. Some will read it like Noble. Some may read it like me. Others will have a totally different interpretation. I think that we are and aspire to be the type of community that casts a vision for the ideal type of engagement from lurkers and trusts them to follow rather than one that will expect lurkers to follow a finely nuanced set of rules on the best grammatical structure for posting questions/comments. Especially given our various language backgrounds, such a goal seems futile at best.
