As an addendum: most of the early game is going to be focused on cottages. I don't have much of a choice in the matter, as I won't be able to work mines and specs at the same time. I have the happy cap to work the cottages, I don't plan to slave much as it's been weakened. The corn city can work 4 rgc for itself and 1 rgc for the capital, the stolen pigs city can work 4 for itself and 2 for the capital, stoel n wheat can work at least 2 rgc for the capital...it's all suggesting an early academy to me, and everyone knows how much I loathe that strategy.
For a comparison, this game is likely to play out in a similar vein to PBEM4V, where I had that size 12 capital and no other cities above size 4...though in this game they aren't going to be much above size 6.

One day I will learn code. And on that day I'm going to rebuild the map generator to give me resources that aren't basically junk tiles.

You don't need code for that, you need scripting.

Thanks for the big explanation. It certainly looks like the map has hosed you here. I don't think I've ever seen so much water without seafood. Anyway, I look forward to seeing what you make of it.

Look, even XML is code, and that's just changing variables. And it's still just about outside my ability.

The seafood,or rather lack there of, is what will hurt me come the mid game. I think I can build a vaguely decent cottage based empire for tech, but I'm never going to have production: I lack hills to windmill and use Serfdom (and I actually think that is still a losing strategy long term), and I don't have the food surplus to use lots of workshops. I'm not going to be able to fight off an invasion unless the invader is completely inept.
I shall have limited population, even with CHM, working mediocre tiles (the cottages won't have time to mature and suck as production tiles now with the nerf to slavery).
I'm still thinking of a way through this, but I've come to the conclusion that an Academy in the capital is a good idea, but I'm also thinking potential CoL run, possibly via Oracle (it's 4 forests with Marble). I want a religion but I'm not sure that the Prophet first is right for this game as I'm not going to be going horizontal particularly fast and don't have anything to work except cottages, so the slider should be fairly high for quite a while. That suggests that after BW (due in 4) and then Agri>Wheel>Pottery>Writing, that Myst>Poly>Masonry>PH>CoL is the right route. A lot can change that though, I do want to get AH to see if I have horses...
