I haven't checked for strategic resources or happy yet, I was going to do that on their overall territory.

My thinking in general was that 3 resources roughly equals 2 resources+bonus food/hammer start. And to make sure the resources could be accessed with only 2 food techs. I counted clam/crab as only half a resource though.

Do people think that idea is workable or should I just give them all one or the other?

Regarding 0 vs 1, my thinking would be:

Corn+sheep = pig+sheep. Fish to make up for the sugar start. Crab +(3) extra forests for 2 flood plains. Each of those equations probably slightly favour 0 though.

The marble plant loses the fishing resources and doesn't gain any new ones ... but I probably should just remove the temptation.

The gold I figured was about the value of a third food resource.

Regardng 3: I just noted it has that ph plant, only needing 1 crab, which it shouldn't.

I really think PB8 and PB13 starts had more variation than these.

I can't remember the PB8 start. PB13 was decently balanced, and I'm not saying that these aren't tolerably balanced for some players. I just know that I'd prefer the capitals to be balanced if I was in the game and that tends to skew my outlook. Some things that are glaring to me when I'm 50t into the game and behind in tech:

Why does that other guy have gold at his capital? rant
Why didn't I get a food resource on MY river like player X (player 8 has 2 for example)? That's 50g/beakers right there? rant

I will say, it is hard to give more feedback on how well things are balanced seeing only the starts, but those still jump out at me. I'm not the mapmaker, though, and I'm not playing. Give them the map they asked for. If they don't like it, they should have asked for a better map. This is the lesson that I learned from PB11.

Yeah, I opted to let them decide.

As for the rest of the map, god knows how I'm going to balance that. Island chains vs continental starts ... I'm pretty sure the capitals were the easy part. crazyeye

TBH, whilst part of me disproves of the gold start, if that's what they asked for, screw'em.
