Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

A leader auction sounds really fun for the lurkers. Just to add to GES' headache, another auction method that could be used is the dutch auction.

Basically, open bidding on all leaders at once, with a very high initial asking price, say 500 gold. Every hour the price is lowered by 10 gold. Anyone can win the auction for a leader at any time, simply by posting that they accept the current asking price. Maybe not as fun to watch but a psychological thriller and a fast way of performing the auction.

That is the fairest way i have seen sofar IF prople can agree on a time-period to hold the auction as we have evryone from GMT to GMT-8 on this forum.

Oh, and if someone is willing to have me on their team, i can help out on the turn playing for between 17:00-Midnight GMT (like in PBEM11) and i may come up with the odd usable idea, but dont quote me on that shhh

My thinking was that if multiple teams are willing to bid the maximum then it would be unfair to award the prize in a "first come first serve" fashion. But thinking about it some more, you are right; a maximum raise would just drag things out anyway, if several teams are willing to go all the way. It would be better to set the budgets and available leaders/civs such that people are reluctant to spend the full budget. (After all, a few hundred gold could pay for a lot of early expansion etc.)

Why are we only looking to auction of leaders and civs. Why don't we expand it to starting tech, traits, UUs and UBs. We can do all of that with a special mod for this game. Hmm - maybe UUs and UBs wouldn't work - maybe you combine them?
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

An alternate to the auction idea, requires modding.

Nice - how long did it take you to find that post again?

'Likes' but I would also add an over-ride cost for trait combos ... say +x for Ind / Philo in addition to the cost of Ind and Philo separately. Just need some way to price them (yuk).

My first thought was - how the hell do you balance that - then I realized the fun is all in spotting the imbalances and exploiting them. It's the same for everyone, to paraphrase Ruff.
I have to run.

We should definitely do a live leaders+civs auction. I think the give everyone 150 gold and then start the bidding at 140 gold per item is a great system. I'd be happy to be the auctioneer. For people who can't make the live event they can either appoint a surrogate/proxy bidder or send in an electronic bid.

I don't think the few missing combos or the starting techs is worth running a mod for the game on all of the different PCs and on the server. Note running a mod means casual subs are pretty much eliminated.

Good point re mods.

This doesn't require a mod - can be done via the WB save.

Oh oh - something else that could be thrown into the mix ... the difficult level. Buy you way down to settler instead of running at deity.

Evil idea Ruff, and sounds like it could be amazing...but almost certainly unbalanceable.

Break-The-Game Version 1:
Org + Ikhanda + Rathaus, at Deity. Pay for units, and that's really it. You can get whatever other traits you may want, and go to town on the bank.

Break-The-Game Version 2:
Buy Settler difficulty (or down to wherever there's a real cost break-point, but at least to Prince or so), and then see what else you can afford.
