I do like the idea of the RBMod, where changes are made to the game instead of expecting everyone to remember a giant laundry list of rules.
This thread is titled "discussion" after all.
I am new to this forum, but I think the general consensus is that in a multiplayer game, having random events occuring (huts, events, barbs) severley disadvantages one team over another, which may imbalance the game. Some of the other concepts such as blockades, nukes, ap, have been banned possibly due to the concepts not being 'fun' to play. From previous games i have lurked, i often have felt the players frustration when two players had to blockade each other, not because they wanted to do so, but had to because not doing so meant they were not playing the game optimally (PB6).

The problem isn't just that some strategies are "unfair", it's that many of these strategies are so useful that you would be stupid NOT to use them when the option is made available. In the opinions of some, that would simplify the metagame in a way that makes the game unfun. It's easy to say that stuff like blockades and spies aren't broken because every player has the same capability to use them, and that wouldn't be wrong at all. But that's exactly the problem.
It's the same sort of deal as retroactively banning certain cards in TCGs, or banning legendaries in Pokemon.

Elkad, these issues are often debated in normal PBEMs and in several games some of those options are left on. This is a demo game, and there was general agreement earlier on to keep the game fairly close to RB standards since we wanted the size of the game to be the primary aspect to it. Experiment all you want in a PBEM, you will probably find takers for it. Anyone is welcome to start a thread in Civ General asking if anyone is up for a game with certain ideas implemented. I have some unusual ideas too that most players here don't care for, but it's usually possible to find a handful who will play along. Note that Corporations were just voted in, against the norm for most games. This is hardly a giant laundry list of rules, there are very few things you need to have memorized in-game.
And as you noted already, RBMod might be more up your alley. It's an active attempt at embracing all game aspects rather than resorting to bans.

Ban "everything" might be a bit of an exaggeration. But yeah, why so much banning?
Well, banning by agreement is the only way to change the game without using a mod. And we don't in general like mods. Or maybe it's just that we wouldn't be able to agree on one.
This isn't a list of things that always get banned. It's a list of things that pretty much always get discussed because some people don't like them.

Okay, annex to settings added, spies off, corps on, three most offending AP resolutions banned.
As for snakepick - pick order :
1. Team Troll
2. Team Pirate
3. Team Gillette
4. Team Menagerie
5. TEAM
This will make turn order of
1. TEAM
2. Team Menagerie
3. Team Gillette
4. Team Pirate
5. Team Troll
For clarity I'm opening new thread for picks and for picks only.

I've really not paid much attention to different snake pick schemes that seems to have been floating around. Is this just normal snake pick i.e. we pick leader+nation 1st and 10th and then will be last in turn order?
