The only things you need to remember to do MM in you head (for this start)
- Cost of worker, settler, warrior
- Output of fp, plains cow (unimproved),
- Output of fp farm, plains cow pasture,
- Farm, chop, pasture costs in worker turns,
- Movement speed of worker,
- Terrain movement cost of forest,
- Tech cost of Agri, Mining and BW,
- Cost to grow to sizes 2 and 3,
- Output of palace in commerce.
- The Start
Seriously, the only stuff that varies game to game is the tech cost, but once you figure that out, it's just a test of memory.

The only upside of this turn: Darrell, here is your avatar for the next week:
Here is my "start". I think I'm going to be role playing the barbs for a few turns.
I will point out now that I could have settled the plains hill, and hell, it would actually be a bit faster, but I really do think I'd prefer to pin my hopes on food in the fog (and anyway, I can move the warrior 3 next turn to scout for food near the plains hill, I can always move back there...)

I haven't read the thread that hard yet so I apologize if any of this has been said before, but...
1. In BTS you'd start with a Scout, so its your own fault you have major guesswork .
2. That tile 88 looks like Tundra to me.
3. Even the second ring looks completely forested, so I don't expect moving the Warrior to help in most cases. The exception seems to be 74 and 33, so I'd move the Warrior either 3 or 7. Actually 11 might be clear as well, but you'd never settle in that direction. I'd probalby move the Warrior 7, with the expectation I'll move my Settler 3. If you want more forests in the BFC, do the opposite.

Which might make them redundant, stupid, or amazing and insightful
hmm
just read the IM log you are thinkign the same two directions I was thinking
It is true the only chance you have is to get out lots of workers and use those forests
me: too green to be tundra
Darrell: nope
look at it
its tundra
2N?
tundra
me: What's the bet?
Darrell: hmm
50g gold next game we are in as opponents?
or we can pick each other's avatar for a day
has to be PG though
me: aw
no fair
avatars for a week
and PG
Darrell: it was an immediate and obvious disclaimer
sure
me: deal
Darrell: I've got the perfect one in mind
me: ok
You do know you can't get tundra in the capital starting area right?
Darrell: umm
no
I did not know that
well played sir

At least I was wise enough to put a PG restriction on it. I don't want to think what might have been otherwise.

Well at least you crossed one thing off your list of things to do in life.

It would have been an avatar a lot of people on the site would like to look at.

OK, new plan: that cow is the only thing making this start remotely viable. I checked to see if there was a resource on that plains, tile, and unfortunately there was, but not one I wanted. So I'm going to move the warrior 3 and settler 33 on turn 1. Turn 2, I'll move the warrior 1, and uncover the entire fat cross if I were to plant 1SW if the plains hill. If it is a decent city site, I'll settle off the plains hill. If it is crap, I'll settle on the plains hill.
Settling on the plains hill will mean that the worker comes out one turn faster than if I found where the settler is now, and the cow is hooked 2 turns faster.

Why ignore the blue circle? Because it was probably sea food, and sea food without Fishing tech is slower than the plains cow (reference: PB1, Persia and Inca starts)

*logs back in to see if the start has magically improved since I logged out*
*cries*
Any one mind if I just keep on settler scouting for land based food?

Maybe you should settle on the coast and chop out tGL.
