Next time you see him, tell him we hope he gets better quickly. Or has shit loads of morphine and doesn't give a damn about anything. Whatever takes away the pain.

Also the problem with vbulletin is it's not free, may make sense to convert over to another system to keep costs down since there would be a lot of work updating everything anyways.
I can certainly offer hosting for free if that's holding anything at all up. Currently have a VPS account just sitting around mostly collecting dust that would be much more than enough for this. Wish I wasn't so rusty (6 years ago was system admin supporting and maintaining web servers for several hosting companies) so I could be more help but any help I can give let me know. Haven't been posting much but I certainly lurk and don't want to lose my reading material
That sounds promising. There's always the alternative of archiving this old board and starting with a new one. Might want to get some of the MoM guys in on this. They seem decently active.
Edit: Found the convertor for PhpBB. We could try it if KoP isn't completely high out of his mind on whatever opiates they are using now. http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?t=1722325

I had a feeling this was the case. If you're in any sort of contact with him, pass on my sincerest regards and well-wishes, and remind him he still has friends who care.

Agreed!
I wanted to lend my support as well. I think in this thread there's a lot of worry over legitimate concerns. None of us wants RB to disappear one day and simply not get back up. I don't think that will happen, but I agree that there does need to be some changes to management, which I'm sure are in the works. Really, really need to get the redirect fixed. No, the site isn't unusable, but it simply isn't 100% safe.
Beyond the technical aspects, RB is still thriving in my opinion. We get new members all the time and there are many, many lurkers. PBEMs always fill up and the new pitboss is a shining example of how strong the community still is. We're not truly "between games." Though I imagine once Diablo 3 comes out it will become busier. I hope whoever does take over updates the main site as well.
Really, I just want to say I have faith and I look forward to the issues being resolved and the site improved.

A charging hippo can run at land speeds in excess of 30mph. Albeit, probably not an incontinent, obese elderly hippo. But don't make the mistake of thinking that Hippos are slow and sedate. That kind of thinking is part of why they're the biggest human killer in nature.
Turtles are also surprisingly nippy. A turtle holds the record for the fastest speeds recorded by any reptile at 22mph.
You all need to work on your metaphorical comparisons to animals.

Sad to hear that there are so many issues with the site at the moment. Also sad to hear that one of the administrators has been hospitalized for several weeks - I don't know you KoP, but I hope your condition improves soon.
The situation here does worry me, because if there are serious technical and security issues with the site then it may be only a matter of time before it is vandalized or damaged beyond repair. I have experienced this twice before with Civ forums I used to be a part of, a few years apart. In both cases the forum software was not adequately protected against security loopholes, and eventually some bored/malicious hackers with a grudge noticed the issues and managed to irreparably damage the site in a short period.
It was almost unreal at the time: one day these forums with thousands of members and hundreds of thousands of posts were there, and the next they were gone. Neither of the forums ever recovered from the attacks... they were permanently shut down and many of the posts were lost forever. In both cases the damage was so great that there was nothing that could be done except to start a new forum from scratch; the more active members of the community stuck together and started to rebuild, but many of the transient and newer members were lost.
Not trying to be a downer here, just saying I have seen it happen before - twice. Hoping that it won't happen doesn't mean that it can't.
I'm not a particularly technically skilled person when it comes to the intricacies of forum software, so I'm not sure how much we're at risk of that kind of thing here, but from what I've read it does make me a bit uneasy. I'd love to help somehow, but I don't have the means to support the costs of hosting and funding proprietary forum software myself, let alone the knowledge to deal with the technical side of things beyond the basics.
One small offer I can make is that if RB ever goes down, I have a forum that can easily be set up as a refuge. Indeed, it's been used as a refuge before, including after when those other forums were hacked. Of course, it would be far preferable to just ensure that RB doesn't go down in the first place. But I thought I'd mention it anyway.

If you read this a certain way, it sounds like quite the veiled thread. Seriously try it, its fun!
But yeah, we really should get RB migrated especially if PB7 is regularly killing the server.

Question. Is anyone else having an issue where they cannot open Realms Beyond Index page? I'm getting like jldnserror. I am mostly able to open subforums and I'm navigating the site using the forum jump at the bottom. It is a tad worrying. On the upside, I haven't seen a Server Too Busy message since this started happening yesterday.
