PBEM39 Setup and Tech Thread

Anyone want to sponsor a game like this? The trait/tech/civ options/bonuses were great in this game, and it wouldn't be TOO hard to come up with a new set of bonuses. I don't believe bonuses actually need to be perfectly balanced (just somewhat so) - just needs to be interesting. Part of the challenge is figuring out what is best.

Haven't gotten to any player threads yet, so that'll be next.

Summary: looking for someone to make a map plus tweaks based on starting stuff, like pbem32.

In the quoted posts I suggest the same map concept but a different map, scooter even suggests reusing most or all of the map wholesale, or you could do something a bit more different (but not too different I hope! I think I got the level of water just right). The bonuses assigned to traits/techs should certainly be different.

Note that I also chose some unusually permissive settings for 32, e.g. war elephants and spies allowed. You, the mapmaker, should make the rules, but Always War is part of the deal and you probably shouldn't be more permissive than I was (e.g. by allowing nukes or tech stealing). wink

* Toroidal, Standard size, 40x40, players are all equidistant from all others.
* It's totally mirrored. (The tile that is (x,y) away from my capital is the same as the tile (x,y) away from anyone else's capital.)
* No barbs, no huts, no random events.
* Always war.
* Prince difficulty.
* While there is enough saltwater that ships will be important, there are not enough water tiles to make circumnavigation possible. (It requires at least 33% water tiles, and there are only about 25%.)

[SIZE="5"]Rules recap[/SIZE]

* Setup is unusual; see above.
* No communication between players is allowed.
* Goes without saying, but play in good faith and put up a good fight.
* The only bans are:
- All spy missions (but not spies).
- Great spy infiltration ability.
- Nukes.
- All UN/AP resolutions if AW doesn't automatically disable them.
- War Elephants (and Ballista Elephants).

Fishing: City has 0 culture
Mining: Tile A becomes flatland
Agriculture: Tile B loses whale boats
Hunting: Tile C loses forest
The Wheel: Tile D, town becomes hamlet
Mysticism: Tile E becomes plains

Additionally there are some civilizations with effects should you choose them:
If you are India, you start without a worker.
If you are Inca, you start without a scout.
If you are Aggressive France, you start without rice.
If you are Charismatic Russia, you get a normal Lab and not a Research Institute.

Financial: Customs House
Imperialistic: Lighthouse

I think it goes without saying that I would sign up for this, and I'm assuming Seven is doing the same. Mainly need a sponsor willing to craft something for us though. And yeah, I wouldn't be strongly opposed to taking the PBEM32 base map and just tweaking it to your heart's content (or crafting something new if you're feeling bold) - using different trait/tech bonuses/maluses could change the game significantly enough.

If someone wants to have a go at the base map I can help balance it after most of the work is done. I don't have the time to do everything though.

I guess I can take a stab at it if you want. I've never made a map before, but if Krill checks the balance it should be OK. I would probably just keep the same map settings from 32 but rearrange the terrain and starting bonuses a bit.

I think the problem is that there's a pitboss planning thread going on... Once the dust settles from that, there may be more interest?

I'd actually be willing to sponsor something like this, but I'm not sure I'm the best person for making a map. Haven't made a map for a PBEM before.

Well darn, gimmie the script used in 32 and I'll make the map, if you're up for wonking out on the trait stuff Scoot.

I'd actually like to change just about all of them so players have to think things through differently again. Had a few ideas.
