Civ IV Teleportation

Hello, brave Beyonders,

It's been a while. I recently got into some single-player CIV again and I have a situation. I don't remember how the unit teleportation rules work when you close borders, and I desperately need to get my army home.

My civ is on the left side of the map. My army is on the right side of the map, fighting France. Sumeria lies directly been me and France. Sumeria just decided to betray and rend me like the rabid dogs we truly are, so I need my army home STAT.

I made peace with France, teleporting my army to the nearest tile of a neutral civ. If I now close borders with that civ, will my units be teleported to the next-closest neutral nation, or into the nearest eligible tile, that is, into my enemy Sumeria's territory? That is to say, if I close borders with each civ in turn, will my army be teleported back into my territory, or is it stuck in exodus?

Notb100% certain what tile they will go to, but it will not be in your territory if you are at war with Sumeria and their land is between your army and your capital.

I think it will be the desert tile 3W1Nbof the stack.

Thank you thank you. I will have to peruse that post of Charriu's more closely to try and figure it out.

Is this base BtS? Either way: Hard to tell from the screens you posted, but the army won't teleport to Washington; they'll aim for your nearest city to them, which looks like it's either Boston or something else north of there. And they won't teleport any farther than they have to. They won't teleport into Sumerian territory (at least, not in base BtS) nor onto tiles occupied by Sumerian units, but will prefer someplace nearby in the territory of someone with whom you have OB, thanks to the rules Charriu described. With more-complete pictures of the map, I can make a better guess, but it depends on how up-to-date your map knowledge is.

Yeah it teleports into the direction of THH nearest city. You need to close borders with everyone to make this possible. Even then if there are random tiles without culture in the way that could screw it up.

Hey, yes, it is base BtS. The nearest city would indeed be Boston. So it sounds like I could close borders with everyone to get them home, and while they may or may not then be able to get to Washington, they would at least be in theatre. Thank you!

Cool! I'll also note (though I can't be sure without seeing the map) you probably don't have to close borders with everyone; I don't think the southern civ(s?) is(/are?) close enough to a straight-line path to divert the 'porters there, for instance. (And if they are, finding that our by bouncing to their territory before closing borders with them might get your troops closer to Washington; again, I'd have to see more of the map to be sure.) Regardless though, it looks like an exciting start to the war! Let us know how it goes!

This is single player - can't you just save the game and try it and reload if it wasn't what you were expecting?

This is an interesting thought ... I will try and let you know what happens!

Well, yes, but I guess there's a certain desire to make the right move the first time. Not a strict ironman, but still. smile
