The problem I am currently having with the barbs is that they are disbanding critical units (ie the ones defending their cities near the humans) because they are running out of money. I cannot seem to give the barbs some starting cash.
Their tech is satellites so that they have map knowledge and trade routes (once they have teched sailing).
I have finally decided to put down some cash and register a website. It is www.ruffhi.com. Now I remain free to move the hosting options without having to change the name of the site.

Did you give them a palace?
Can you not give them gold via Edit City in WB?

No - it seems to go to the last player I was editing.

You can give them great merchants, but you'll have to edit the map so that players can't captured a city full of them settled.

Does giving the barbs techs work? I tried doing that and then saved to a worldbuilder file, and it doesn't seem to be persisted there. There is not BeginTeam or BeginPlayer section for the barbarians in worldbuilder (although their player id seems to be 18).
I have to run.

I've been teaming a player with the Barbs to see how they go - the gold ends up with the human player - maybe the tech does too. How annoying. I really want Barbs to have international trade routes from the get go.
Any suggestions?
Do barbs pay unit maintenance for animals?

Airports create a trade route, I think. They did in Civ 3.
Another way - I seem to remember that trade routes connect along coastal water squares even if blocked by water ice. That's one way to create a trade connection pre-Astronomy that players can't use for travel.
Maintenance for animals - good question, I don't know.
Another option entirely: Instead of barbarians, why not just make it a proper AI civ, and lock it into war with the players?

That is a pretty good idea - I could do that, get those trade routes going and then retire myself.
