I think you just have a bunch of players that are used to winning in the first 50T. Well, and you have Gaspar who is used to convincing himself he's already lost in the first 50T. I really don't think anyone's out of it or has it sewn up by any stretch. We may very well get to the mid-game with all or nearly all players still in contention, and all of them will be convinced they are in fact out of contention.

I'm pretty sure that upgrading in general always wipes out fortification bonuses.

Serdoa's demos are impressive. Can he utilize his superior production, grab the most land and win the game or are the others snowballing later ahead with stronger economies?

Well, if he can do that then I think he should be able to close it out. All he would have to do afterwards is to ensure he held those borders and and build an army to take out one of his two neighbours to force a concession IMO. That GNP without Currency is...intimidating.
