Yeah Toroidal is the plan.

Yeah a string could work, I assume you are thinking cylindrical wrap? Or could that be toroidal too? How would that wrap?

For example here island 2 is connected to all other islands while islands 1-5 abd 3-4 are far away from each other, and other connections (like 1-3 and 1-4) seem farther away as well.

String works with cylinder and toroidal, but 5 on an island can be nasty as the islands wrap onto themselves. The orientation of each individual island start plays a part.

Specifically this is in reference to string toroidal.
I think once I have the first continent, I can play with it within the two layouts and see which is best.
Adrien, thanks for the layout. I think as long as I count the tiles between continents I should be able to equalize most distances even if some distances are diagonal vs. horizontal. Additionally making sure there are islands to fight over beyond that initial "Home" island.
So I think I'm going forward with the plan designing the first island to be copied. The added benefit is that once I have finished the first island I will be able to send out starting screenshots to all the players since I'll be copy and pasting. After that I can work on relative continent placement and island construction while players begin the pick selections.
I'm leaning towards the toroidal star, but the cylindrical string also has a lot of simplistic appeal. I think it depends on how it looks once I get done with the initial continent.

Possibility for 5 in a row solution (cylindrical or toroidal)
Or a toroidal solution that may or may not be possible...

Pb37 had the second map layout, it has been done before.
You could combine PB37 plan with a PBEM7 style astro land though. That would be new.

If this is on Emperor I think Serdoa is undervaluing Hammurabi. Nothing to help with early expansion but half price civic and unit maintenance make sustained expansion affordable for a lot longer. By the medieval era those cost savings are going to be very significant on Emperor difficulty. Winding up with a city or two fewer than your neighbour is fine if you're out-teching them hard enough by the end of the classical era that you can turn them into food in the medieval era.

Here are the starts.
Start 1:
Start 2:
Start 3:
Start 4:
Start 5:
I plan on releasing them in 24 hours, so any comments would be good. I'm fairly certain I've got it mostly balanced.
Each start has a choice between a PH and A jungled sugar. That choice forces a choice between two food resources, one of which is a 6f tile and one which is a 5f1h or a 4f2h tile.
Each start also has a 5f resource that is claimed by either PH or sugar.
Each has a fish with either choice. Each also has a FPH but not always first ring with the choice of a PH.
Each start has an ivory and 2 calendar resources either spice, silk or incense. (can't see the spice in the fog on Start 1 but they are both there on opposite sides, one for sugar and one for PH.
Each start has an island with wine on it.
Each PH and Sugar choice start gives 3 hills and 5 forests in the BFC.
Each start choice is coastal.
Each food resource is riverside.
I'm going with the toroidal string and 5 larger astro islands, but I'll work on that more later, I'm still not done the base continent yet. I'm hand-drawing a lot of it.

I'd love any of these starts. Will you reveal BFC for plains hill and sugar plants for each start?
My only nitpick is for start 5 - desert incense is a bit of a crap tile to have in your capital bfc compared to the silk and spices the others get.
Completed: RB Demogame - Gillette, PBEM46, Pitboss 13, Pitboss 18, Pitboss 30, Pitboss 31, Pitboss 38, Pitboss 42, Pitboss 46, Pitboss 52 (Pindicator's game), Pitboss 57
In progress: Rimworld

I think I will just give these screenshots since there is not much in the fog to change the decision. The most relevant factors are already revealed. I think giving more won't change the base decision, but maybe I'm wrong about that.
The desert incense could be plains incense I guess. The trade off about the incense is that there are 2 incense for that player and then there is one more incense in the center of the continent on an island. So each continent only has 3 incense according to my plan. Also the spice and silks are only 4 on a continent with 2 for 2 of the players. That means 25 sugar, 20 silk, 20 spice, 15 incense, and 10? dyes on astro islands. Also 25 ivory, 25 gems, and the silver and gold are along the borders between people, 25 of those as well. I think 25 furs will be on islands around the continents again along borders.
What do you think about that?
