Is that character a variant? (I just love getting asked that in channel.) - Charis

"Don't move or the bunny gets it" - German Joey plays Cyrus the Virus of Khmer

Found Haram's capital. For some reason I thought that the path would be blocked in the west, so I went all the way around. Oh well.

Looks like our capitals are 12 spaces away. He has a ridiculously nice 2nd city spot either 1E of my scout (for 3 food, 1 first ring) or 1NE (2 food, 1 first ring, 1f4E tile 2nd ring and a free grassland cottage, defensive river as a chokepoint). I certainly don't have anything as nice, although hopefully that means my strategic resources are a little closer to my capital. Speaking of that, I'm starting to get a bit stressed at my inadvertent mistake of settling where I did - I really shoulda settled 1W so that my pig would be shareable to any resource that spawned in the eastern side of where my BFC woulda been had I settled in place. I had suspected a resource to be around there at the game start, because torusland resources rarely spawn in adjacent tiles and I only had 2 visible resources otherwise. But, now I can't share neither the pig or the cow in that direction because of the water. Ugh.

When I generated a few test maps of the same script, dimensions, and player count, the average distance between caps was more like 20 tiles, and a lot more diagonal. Well, as long as the other players have to deal with this same thing, so be it. I just feel like my every move so far on this map is being railroaded and that is annoying me. First, I got railroaded into a limited civ pick because of the awkward starting techs I needed and my position on the snake, and now my opening will be all slow and screwy because I'm 12 tiles away from a guy with perfect starting techs for shoving chariots down my throat and a strong motivation for settling towards me. What a pain...

To be entirely honest, if you move away from a reasonable start then these are consequences of your actions.

He would be just as close had I not moved? I moved horizontally and he is situated vertically. What the hell is your point? Are you trying to tell me that we both had (still has, in his case) horses in the BFC?

I explained the routine behind the balancing and map design in the lurker thread, but if the problem is to do with AH resources at the capital, that's a problem with the mod. On top of that, the diagonal bit, the only thing I can really say is that novice's map tool is useful in assessing the balance of various starts and that managing this sort of problem effectively is a common theme in many of the games on RB.

The AH food resources in the capital are one thing - it leads to an annoying tech railroad, but I assume many other people have similar starts based on their civ choices. OK, fine, whatever, that's still fair. What really has me fuming is your assumption that I'm stupid for moving to grab a 1F4H, already improved tile in my BFC as an Imperialistic civ (making it a 7 yield tile, which is pretty much some ridiculous FFH2 shit) that, in a sandbox, gives me a faster start in every direction I might choose to emphasize (more miliary or more settlers or more workers or more & faster granaries and, generally, all of the above) because I "should have known" that my unexpectedly close hunting/wheel neighbor and I would both have an accessible horse in our BFCs. This is on top of the fact that I'm Charismatic and could easily work 6 or 7 huge yield tiles at a time where most other civs would have half that! "Consequences of my actions" - What the fuck!

If this mysterious, hypothetical resource is copper, then whatever, I don't care, I can grab that with my second city and still have it hooked up before him, much less before he can choke me. If its iron or uranium, then it doesn't matter. If its horse, well, how am I suppose to know that I'll be effectively dead (or choked, which, this early, is the same thing) with no chance of recovery before turn 25 if I moved?

I don't think you are stupid for moving. I think there are positives and negatives to moving and finding out there is someone 12 tiles away is simply something to deal with. That you think I'd give spoiler information about resources at starts is amusing though, but then I have a somewhat bizarre sense of humour at times.

Well, I guess there's nothing else to say now, none of this speculation or panic really means anything yet I guess, and we'll find out if he's chariot-ready and I'm not (or vice-versa?) 7 turns from now. Maybe I'm over-reacting, but I did just read retap and seven's situation from PB 16 a few weeks ago and can't help but notice certain similarities.

Awww no, don't calm down! Lurkers demand Krill-bashing! You should hear what he's saying about your mum in the lurker thread! mischief

Wait, what? contemplate
I also support Old Harry on more bashing Krill. I mean he did the map so he deserved.
